This website is run by the RCE East Midlands Schools Working Group. It provides case studies and a directory of providers of support for schools wishing to undertake sustainability projects. Education for sustainable development, global awareness and international perspectives are important because they equate with ‘good education’. Education which is broadening, exciting and engaging, enables learners to be sensitive to the environment and increases their understanding and commitment to their place in an interconnected world at local, national and global level. An exciting dimension of work in these areas is the way in which learners engage with work. Learner’s feedback show that they are engaged, challenged and stimulated, and exciting learning like this, helps pupils learn well and make good progress, as well as develop as individuals. For schools, these areas of work have real significance. Approaches can be delivered in cross-curricular ways in all phases, and are easily integrated into the creative curriculum, offer opportunities for personalised and active learning and offer chances for schools developing approaches in Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education. Opportunities for embedding approaches within the 5 outcomes of Every Child Matters are also easily addressed. Approaches in sustainable development, global education and international links are advocated by central Government, by Local Authorities and national bodies such as QCA and Ofsted. As with other key issues for schools, which help support ‘the big picture’, schools will want to ensure that approaches reflect what they stand for as an institution through aims, ethos and culture. Ensuring approaches are reflected in the SEF and the school development or strategic plan is also good practice. They may also want to explore how the work is monitored and evaluated, opportunities to work with agencies which offer professional support and guidance and will want to share good practice with and involve stakeholders; including parents, community and governors. |
